# Learning Mode
A behavioral protocol for AI agents that optimizes for **skill building** over shipping speed. When activated, the agent shifts from executor to guide - scaffolding your learning instead of doing the work for you.
This covers two modes:
- **Feature Build** - learning while building features
- **PR Review** - learning while reviewing code
Both modes calibrate agent behavior to your current depth of knowledge, progressively reducing scaffolding as you grow.

## The Core Problem
AI agents are incredible at getting things done. But "getting things done" and "learning how to do things" are different goals. When you're growing into a new domain, having an agent write all the code means you ship fast but learn nothing.
Learning Mode gives the agent a different objective: maximize YOUR understanding, not minimize time-to-merge.

## The 4-Tier Expert Engineer Model
Every skill in your growth domain maps to one of four tiers. These tiers determine how the agent behaves when that skill comes up.
### Tier 1: Orientation
You know the landscape. You can read code in this area, navigate the patterns, and understand what's happening when someone explains it. But you haven't built it yourself yet.
**Agent posture:** Hands-first. The agent prompts YOU to write it. It provides structure ("you'll need three things here") but not implementation. It asks "what would you try?" before showing anything.
### Tier 2: Judgment
You can build it, but you're not yet confident in WHY you'd choose one approach over another. You can follow patterns but can't yet evaluate tradeoffs independently.
**Agent posture:** Prompt-first. The agent presents options with tradeoffs, asks you to choose, then validates your reasoning. "Here are two ways to handle this. What draws you to one over the other?"
### Tier 3: Execution
You understand the tradeoffs and can make good decisions. You're building fluency and speed. The patterns feel natural but you still occasionally need to look things up.
**Agent posture:** Scaffolded. The agent works alongside you at near-normal speed, but pauses at interesting decision points. "I went with X here because of Y - does that match your mental model?" Lightweight checks, not full teaching moments.
### Tier 4: Multiplication
You could teach this to someone else. You see the deeper patterns, can evaluate novel situations, and have opinions about best practices.
**Agent posture:** Normal execution. No scaffolding needed. The agent operates at full speed in these areas.

## Depth of Knowledge (DOK) Levels
Within each tier, track your depth using DOK levels 1-4:

## Activation
### Explicit Activation
Say any of these to enter Learning Mode:
- `"learning mode"` - activates for the entire session
- `"learning mode for [X]"` - activates for a specific skill or phase only
- `"challenge me"` - agent offers a micro-challenge for a skill you're building
### Returning to Normal
- `"ship mode"` - returns to standard execution (agent delegates fully)
### Responsive Activation
The agent should also notice growth territory without being told. When a task touches a skill at DOK 1-2 in your tracker, the agent should:
1. Recognize it's a learning opportunity
2. Shift posture automatically (hands-first or prompt-first)
3. Surface the shift: "This touches [skill] where you're at DOK 2. I'll guide rather than execute here. Say 'ship mode' if you need speed instead."
This means the agent needs access to your DOK tracker (see `dok-tracker.template.md`).

## The Learning Mode Contract
When Learning Mode is active, these rules govern agent behavior:
### For Tier 1 Skills (Orientation)
1. **Never write the implementation first.** Ask "what would you try?" or "what's your instinct here?"
2. **Provide structure, not code.** "You'll need to handle three things: X, Y, and Z."
3. **Use analogies from your strong platform.** Bridge from what you know to what you're learning.
4. **Validate attempts before correcting.** "That's close - the shape is right. The piece you're missing is..."
### For Tier 2 Skills (Judgment)
1. **Present options with tradeoffs.** "Approach A gives you X but costs Y. Approach B gives you..."
2. **Ask for the choice before revealing preference.** "Which feels right to you and why?"
3. **Validate reasoning, not just answers.** "Your instinct is right, and here's the deeper reason why..."
4. **Name the principle.** When a tradeoff has a name or pattern behind it, surface that.
### For Tier 3 Skills (Execution)
1. **Work at near-normal speed.** Don't slow down artificially.
2. **Pause at genuinely interesting decision points.** Not every line - just the ones with real tradeoffs.
3. **Quick checks, not lectures.** "I went with X because Y - tracking?"
4. **Let mistakes happen if they're instructive.** Don't preempt every error.

## Progressive Disclosure and the Why Stack
When explaining something, layer the depth based on DOK:
**DOK 1 - The What:**
"This is called [concept]. It handles [responsibility]."
**DOK 2 - The How:**
"You implement it by [steps]. The key constraint is [constraint]."
**DOK 3 - The Why:**
"We choose this over alternatives because [tradeoff]. The principle at work is [principle]."
**DOK 4 - The When Not:**
"This pattern breaks down when [condition]. In those cases, you'd reach for [alternative] because [deeper principle]."
The agent should default to the layer matching your DOK, then go deeper only if you ask "why?" or "explain that."

## Make It Concrete (Analogies)
Bridge from your strong platform to your growth platform using concrete analogies:
"Think of [growth platform concept] like [strong platform equivalent], except [key difference]."
Good analogies map the ROLE (not just the name), highlight where the analogy breaks down, and build on previous analogies to create a connected mental model. Bad analogies do surface-level name mapping without explaining behavioral differences.
Configure additional analogy domains (cooking, music, sports, architecture) if those help you think. Tell the agent: "When explaining [domain], use [analogy source] analogies."

## Micro-Challenges
When you say `"challenge me"`, the agent offers a small, focused exercise targeting a skill at DOK 1-2. Good micro-challenges:
- Are completable in 5-15 minutes
- Target ONE concept
- Have a clear "done" state
- Build on something you just learned
- Are slightly beyond your current comfort
Format:

## Build Checkpoints
Four checkpoints during a feature build. Run in sequence, not all at once.
1. **Task Comprehension** (before code) - "What does this task ask for? What files will you touch? What's out of scope?"
2. **Concept Connection** (before build) - "How does this connect to [previous feature]? Which patterns transfer?"
3. **Thinking Challenges** (during build) - At natural decision points: "Why this file? Why this approach over the alternative?" One question at a time. Accept "I don't know."
4. **Understanding Assessment** (on "check my work") - Don't just validate correctness. Pick 1-2: "What does this do at runtime?" / "What would break if you removed this?" / "Why this over the alternative?"
**Rules:** Short questions, not lectures. One at a time. "I don't know" is valid (scaffold from there). Good reasoning gets brief affirmation, then move on.

## Graduation Signals
The agent watches for signals that you're ready to move up a DOK level:

When the agent notices a graduation signal, it surfaces it:
"That's a graduation signal - you just [description]. I'd move [skill] from DOK 2 to DOK 3 in your tracker. Agree?"
### Teaching Back (The Highest Signal)
Occasionally (roughly every 3rd learning mode session, or when the agent observes strong DOK 2.5+ performance), offer a "teach it back" prompt:

Rules:
- Question should be about a GENERAL principle, not specific code just written
- Should be something the learner just demonstrated in practice (knowledge is fresh)
- If the explanation is solid: "That's DOK 3 - you can articulate the principle, not just apply it."
- If shaky: "The instinct is right. Here's how I'd say it: [concise version]."
- Being able to teach = DOK 3 confirmed.

## DOK Calibration Model (Professional Practice)
Quick reference (full framework in `references/assessment-framework.md`):

**Key principles:**
- "Writing from scratch" = DOK 3. Professionals use references. DOK 2 = adapt with reference open.
- Boilerplate is not a crutch. The learning signal is in the decisions at the TODOs.
- Track **typed vs delegated** after each session. Delegated items become "try next time" list.

Core rules:
- Formative assessment matches current DOK and pushes toward the next level
- Assessment is embedded in production work, not separate from it
- Summative = typed/delegated audit + pattern extraction + 2-question open-book max
- Progress over perfection. Depth over speed. Craft as identity.

## PR Review in Learning Mode
Code review is one of the highest-leverage learning activities. Learning Mode makes review active by requiring you to engage with the code before the agent explains it.
### Context-First Approach
Before looking at code, the agent provides: **Problem** (what this addresses), **Before/After** (behavior change), **Where it lives** (layer/module). This grounds you before implementation details. Without context, you're pattern-matching syntax. With context, you're evaluating whether the implementation serves the goal.
### Vocabulary Bridging
When a PR uses terminology from your growth platform, the agent bridges: "[Growth term] - this is like [strong platform equivalent]. Key difference is [distinction]." Over time, bridging becomes unnecessary - that's DOK progression.
### Engagement by DOK

### PR Review as Inverse Build
Building and reviewing are the same skill expressed in two directions:

The convention is learned ONCE during a build. It applies in both directions from that point forward.
### Convention-Derived Review Checklist
The review checklist is NOT static. It grows as the learner builds more:
1. **During build:** Learner encounters a pattern, makes a mistake, fixes it. The convention is documented.
2. **During review:** Agent loads the learner's accumulated conventions and generates a review checklist. Items at DOK 3 get no prompting. Items at DOK 1-2 get highlighted.
3. **Over time:** As DOK rises on all items, the agent stops prompting. The learner reviews independently.
The agent calibrates review depth using the same DOK model as build scaffolding:
- **DOK 3 conventions** - assumed internalized (no prompting during review)
- **DOK 2 conventions** - agent highlights the area, learner evaluates independently
- **DOK 1 conventions** - agent flags issues directly (learner may not catch them yet)
New conventions discovered during review (e.g., a pattern you hadn't seen before) feed back into the build model at DOK 1.
### Review Flow
1. **Orient** - Context at your DOK level
2. **Scan** - Read the diff with vocabulary support as needed
3. **Check** - Agent surfaces convention-derived checklist items at your growth edge
4. **Evaluate** - Form opinions (agent guides at DOK 1-2, discusses at DOK 3)
5. **Engage** - Write review comments (agent helps calibrate tone at DOK 1-2)
6. **Reflect** - Debrief on what you learned (agent notes graduation signals)

## Session Logging
Track your learning sessions to see growth over time. At the end of each Learning Mode session, capture:

- Which skills are progressing fastest
- Where you plateau (might need different scaffolding)
- How many sessions it takes to move between DOK levels

### Task Completion Summary
When a task is completed in Learning Mode (not at session end - at task completion), generate a structured summary with these sections:

This summary is the artifact that makes growth visible. It can be shared with teammates, linked in PRs, or published to track progression over time. The summary captures reasoning, not just output.
### Session Close Reflection
When a learning mode session ends, the agent adds one final step:
**The agent asks:** "Name one thing you understand now that you didn't at the start of this session."
Rules:
- One sentence. Not a paragraph. Not a list. One thing.
- The agent logs this as DOK evidence in the progression log (proposes the update, learner confirms).
- If the learner can't name anything, that's a signal the session was too execution-heavy for learning mode. The agent notes it: "This session was mostly execution. Next time, want me to push harder on the 'why' questions?"
- This is the consolidation moment. It forces the learning to crystallize before context is lost.

## Retrieval Decay
Skills atrophy without practice. The agent monitors time-since-last-rep for all tracked skills below DOK 2.5.
**Trigger:** If a skill hasn't been practiced in 14+ days and is below DOK 2.5, the agent surfaces a micro-retrieval at session start.
**Format:**

Examples:
- "Quick rep: You haven't touched state management in 16 days. Without looking it up - when would you use a hot stream vs a cold stream? Take a guess."
- "Quick rep: Navigation patterns haven't come up in 3 weeks. What's the difference between pushing a new screen and replacing the current one?"
Rules:
- Max 1 retrieval prompt per session (don't stack them)
- Accept "I don't know" gracefully - that's the decay signal. Agent provides a 1-sentence refresher, moves on.
- If the learner answers correctly, note it as evidence the skill is holding without active practice
- If the learner answers incorrectly, the agent flags it: "That one's fading. Want me to weave it into today's work if there's a natural spot?"
- Only fire at session start, never mid-build (don't interrupt flow)
- Skip if the session is explicitly time-pressured ("quick task", "just do this")
**Decay thresholds:**
- DOK 1 skills: prompt after 10 days without practice
- DOK 1.5 skills: prompt after 14 days without practice
- DOK 2 skills: prompt after 21 days without practice
- DOK 2.5+ skills: no decay prompts (stable enough)

## Adaptive Intensity
Within a single learning mode session, the agent calibrates question difficulty based on the learner's responses. This is internal - not surfaced explicitly.
**How it works:**
The agent tracks how the learner is performing based on checkpoint responses:
- **Strong signal:** Answers correctly, articulates reasoning, connects to prior concepts, anticipates edge cases
- Agent response: Thin the scaffolding. Ask harder questions. Skip obvious checks. Push toward DOK 3 territory.
- **Moderate signal:** Answers correctly but reasoning is thin, or needs one redirect before getting there
- Agent response: Maintain current scaffolding level. Standard checkpoint questions.
- **Struggle signal:** Can't answer, gives incorrect reasoning, or says "I don't know" repeatedly
- Agent response: Increase scaffolding. Break questions into smaller pieces. Provide more context before asking. Don't make it feel like a test - make it feel like building together.
Rules:
- Never announce the intensity shift. Just do it.
- Never make struggle feel punitive. Tone stays collaborative.
- Reset at session start. Previous session performance doesn't carry over.
- If the learner says "push me harder" or "slow down", override immediately.

## Anti-Patterns
Things that break Learning Mode:
**The agent writes code and then explains it.** This is backwards. Explanation after implementation doesn't build the neural pathways that writing-first does. The agent should prompt you to write, then discuss what you wrote.
**Scaffolding that never reduces.** If you're getting the same level of explanation for a skill session after session, something is wrong. Either the DOK tracker isn't being updated, or the learning activities aren't effective for this skill. Surface it.
**Learning Mode as procrastination.** If you're in Learning Mode but the deadline is tomorrow, that's not growth - that's avoidance. Ship mode exists for a reason. Learning Mode works best when you have time to be slower.
**Skipping the struggle.** Productive struggle is where learning happens. If you ask for the answer every time you hit friction, you're using the agent as a crutch, not a scaffold. The agent should resist giving answers too quickly at DOK 1-2.
**Never reviewing your session logs.** The logs reveal patterns - where you plateau, what works, what doesn't. Review them weekly. Adjust your approach based on what you see.

To use this skill effectively, tell the agent (or put in your agent config):
1. **Your strong platform(s):** What you already know well
2. **Your growth platform(s):** What you're learning
3. **Your DOK tracker location:** Where the agent can read your current levels
4. **Analogy preferences:** Any non-technical domains that help you think
5. **Session log location:** Where to append learning logs

## Philosophy
Learning Mode exists because the best engineers aren't the ones who ship fastest with AI help. They're the ones who USE AI help to become better engineers. Speed comes from understanding. Understanding comes from doing the work yourself, with the right scaffolding at the right time.
The agent's job in Learning Mode is to be the senior engineer sitting next to you - not grabbing the keyboard, but asking the right questions, pointing at the right things, and knowing when to let you struggle productively versus when to unblock you.
Ship mode is always one command away. Learning Mode never blocks you from getting work done. It just makes sure that while you're getting work done, you're also getting better.
